Farewell Jack

I met Jack in 2008 when he was a scruffy-haired teenager. I saw him around the traps for the next few years, then he went overseas, and now he’s dead, aged 28. Farewell Jack.

This week I learnt of the death of Jack Chapman, a young man I first met around 2008.

Jack always made me feel happy.  He was someone I saw from time to time at the Laird Hotel, and around bear and gay events.

I wasn’t especially close as a friend, but Jack was there for a chat on the odd occasion, sometimes for a project of his, or for his fundraising for the Victorian AIDS Council.

In this audio clip (extracted from episode 21 of the Cubby House podcast, recorded on September 28 2009) Jack tops and tails the reading Sandra Schneiderman and I performed of Wayne Hoffman’s “A place at the table”:

The Cubby House – A place at the table

After some years we kinda lost touch, more because I wasn’t hanging around the Laird as much, and because he wasn’t around either.  One day I found out he was actually living overseas, and that he was in a relationship with a guy there.  We saw each other at the Laird somewhere around this time (it’s blurry, I don’t recall if he came back or it was before he went away), and that was the last time I saw Jack.

Going Ga Ga at Bearaoke

On Wednesday this week (October 17) I was driving back from Bairnsdale to Mallacoota, parked in Lakes Entrance for a break, and Gregory (my husband) forwarded me a message he’d seen on Facebook:

20181017 Message from Gregory

The message was to a photo on a mutual friend’s page.  The caption read:

I am saddened and shocked of the news of the passing of jack/tank. R.I.P big fella

I didn’t know Jack was now using the name Tank (or that he had changed his last name).

It turns out his death on October 15 was connected to a lung condition.  Dead at 28.

Jack was one of the sweetest guys that had come into my life, and now he’s gone.  He did a lot for the community here in Melbourne.  I’ll miss him for sure.

Here’s a gallery of a few pics I took of him, or were taken of us, between 2008 and 2012.

POSTSCRIPT (October 20)

Three redacted copies of Jack’s death certificate have surfaced herehere and here.  It points to “Silicon Injection Syndrome” as a cause of death.  I was not previously aware of this syndrome, so looked it up and found this 2006 article published by the Radiological Society of North America:

Liquid silicone, which is often used for breast augmentation and other cosmetic procedures, can cause respiratory failure if not injected properly by a licensed physician. A study of individuals who underwent illegal silicone injections revealed a high fatality rate from pulmonary silicone embolism, or obstruction of the lungs. The study was presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America.

There clearly needs to be greater education around the dangers of silicone injections for cosmetic enhancement, particular if death is a likely outcome from incorrect administration.

How I got my latest 30-day Facebook ban

I scored another 30-day Facebook ban that served no purpose.

On July 14 Facebook rewarded me with another 30-day ban for posting this story and accompanying comment, which apparently breached their “Community Standards”.

20180714 Pink Apostates post gets me a 30 day ban on Facebook

I was not actually told which part of my post breached their standards, so am unclear about what I shouldn’t write in future.

These insane 30-day bans make no sense, and with no practical appeal process the entire exercise is a complete farce.

David Hart at The Slowly Boiled Frog should apologise to women

There is no excuse for using language that is designed to degrade and harm women.

David Hart runs The Slowly Boiled Frog blog, “A chronicle of the pursuit for LGBT equality and gun sanity”.

In his August 2 2018 article “Blowhard Bill Donohue: Thou shall not defy me” he writes (my emphasis added):

As for calling Ivanka a c**t she deserves the opprobrium because Daddy is a dick and she is an enabler. Maybe if her husband, do-nothing Jared, does some jail time courtesy of Mr. Mueller, she will gain insight into honesty. It’s a tough one because daddy tells on average about seven lies per day.

The gendered word c-sparkle is used to degrade women on the basis of their gender, even when it’s used as a slur against men or by women.  Ultimately women are the victim of its use.

I used to use this word as a slur and have since learnt that it hurts women.  I have apologised for my behaviour and no longer use this word or anything else that harms women.

Any use of the c-sparkle word is unacceptable, but moreso when it’s used by a person campaigning for equality for LGBTIQ people.

So David, I know you mean well, but if you’re going to hurt women in the process of standing up against bigotry, then I can’t support your activism and won’t read your site any more.  To that end I have unsubscribed from your blog.

I will resume reading your blog when you reflect on this matter and realise it’s not ok to use a slur that harms women.

ACON must sort out the PID Mark Allaby LMI IBM mess

ACON’s Pride in Diversity Program is a disgrace due to a serious conflict its foundation member IBM has.

ACON says of its Pride Inclusion Programs:

Pride Inclusion Programs are social inclusion initiatives of ACON. ACON was established in 1985 as the AIDS Council of NSW and is now Australia’s largest HIV prevention, HIV support and LGBTI health organisation. An important part of ACON’s mission is to help make the places where our community members live, work, study and play more inclusive of LGBTI people, improving the mental health and wellbeing of our community through the reduction of stigma, discrimination and social exclusion.

Pride in Diversity is one of these programs:

Pride in Diversity is the national not-for-profit employer support program for LGBTI workplace inclusion specialising in HR, organisational change and workplace diversity. Pride in Diversity publishes the Australian Workplace Equality Index (AWEI), Australia’s national benchmarking instrument for LGBTI workplace inclusion from which Top Employers for LGBTI people is determined.

Amongst the Pride in Diversity Foundation Members is IBM:

In 2017 IBM declared their “support of the LGBT community” by introducing a rainbow logo:

Mark Allaby is IBM’s Financial Market Expert:

20180707 Mark Allaby IBM Financial Market Expert

As of May 31 2018 the public ASIC register indicated Mark Allaby was still a Director of the Lachlan Macquarie Institute:

20180531 Mark Allaby LMI Director ASIC Register

In March 2017 The Australian reported that Mark Allaby had resigned as a board member of the Lachlan Macquarie Institute, but either that news story was lacking factual accuracy, or LMI had breached their requirements to update ASIC of a change in board membership.

To help understand the ideology of the Lachlan Macquarie Institute, it is helpful to know that it is an initiative of the Australian Christian Lobby.  This is evidenced in the ACL’s July 5 2018 newsletter:

20180705 ACL Newsletter LMI.png

It is also evidenced in the WHOIS record for lmi.org.au, which shows the domain name is currently (and was previously) registered to the Australian Christian Lobby:

Alongside LMI’s Mark Allaby is Lyle Shelton, also a Director on the board:

20180531 LMI Director Lyle Shelton

Lyle Shelton is the immediate past Managing Director of the Australian Christian Lobby.  He stepped down from the role, and the organisation’s board, on Feb 2 2018 to pursue a career in politics as a senatorial candidate for the Australian Conservatives.

Martyn Iles, the current ACL Managing Director, also happens to be on the LMI board as Secretary:

20180531 LMI Director Martyn Iles.png

Adding to the litany of anti-LGBTIQ equality personalities on the LMI board is Lyle Shelton’s disgraced ACL predecessor, Jim Wallace:

20180531 LMI Director Jim Wallace

The ACL and Lyle Shelton have a strong record of opposing equal rights for LGBTIQ people and eroding their dignity.  This has been an obsession of Lyle Shelton and the ACL going by an analysis of Lyle’s Twitter output while he was employed by the ACL.

The Lachlan Macquarie Institute board is peppered with people whom many would consider to be the arch enemies of the LGBTIQ community.

Mark Allaby’s presence as a Director of the Lachlan Macquarie Institute, an organisation that in no way distances itself from the hateful and intolerant values of the Australian Christian Lobby, makes it clear that he shares the values of the board members he sits amongst, and of the organisation that enables his board.

LMI claim they “prepare Christian men and women for leadership and public service”:

As a centre for leadership and public service, we offer a range of short and long programmes for people of varying ages and professions. Each programme targets specific areas of public engagement, including public service, policy, politics, law, education, not-for-profit, and church. Programmes combine Scripture, social analysis, Christian apologetics, lawmaking, political science, and philosophy.

It is beyond belief that as an employee of IBM, a foundation member of ACON’s Pride in Diversity program, Mark Allaby shares an iota of his employer’s values when it comes to LGBTIQ inclusion and diversity.

It is beyond belief that Mark Allaby could be considered a role model in providing respect and dignity for his transgender and gender diverse co-workers or clients.

It is beyond belief that Mark Allaby could, with any shred of sincerity, afford respect for his co-workers or clients in same-sex marriages, considering the gargantuan campaign the ACL promoted and funded to oppose the passage of marriage equality.

It is beyond belief that IBM, by employing a person who is a Director of an organisation that prepares people to erode the legal equality of LGBTIQ Australians, could be sincere in its responsibility as a foundation member of ACON’s Pride in Diversity Program.

It is beyond belief that ACON are genuinely committed to “improving the mental health and wellbeing of our community” by keeping IBM as a member of their Pride in Diversity Program while Mark Allaby is simultaneously an employee of IBM and associated with the prominent anti-LGBTIQ-equality Lachlan Macquarie Institute.

ACON needs to sort this mess out, because until they do, their programme will remain a disgrace.

Car driven into Australian Christian Lobby headquarters in Canberra (Dec 22 2016)

Liberal power players resign
(Dec 27 2012)

Controversial Canberra Liberals powerbroker Tio Faulkner has quit his position in the office of ACT Opposition Leader Zed Seselja.

Mr Faulkner recently resigned his position as director of electorate services but will stay on as ACT party president.

A second powerbroker, Stephen Doyle – Mr Seselja’s chief-of-staff, brother-in-law and Canberra Liberals campaign manager – has also left the ACT Legislative Assembly after he opted out of a contract renewal.

The exodus may stoke speculation Mr Seselja is contemplating a federal tilt in the 2013 poll.

Submissions into inquiry about recognising foreign same-sex marriages closes soon

Lyle Shelton scores a hat trick against himself

Lyle Shelton had three of his domain names deregistered in under two months due to breach of auDA policy.

“To lose one parent may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness.” — Oscar Wilde

In the wake of the deregistration of Lyle Shelton’s domain names lyleshelton.com.au and lyleshelton.net.au, and his subsequent claim this was an attempt to silence him, it’s interesting to note that he made no such fuss when his domain lyleshelton.org.au was also recently deregistered.

The Internet Archive shows us the existence of the domain lyleshelton.org.au:

Lyle Shelton had been publishing articles under lyleshelton.org.au, in parallel to publishing them on lyleshelton.com.au, evidenced by records of posts received via RSS subscription between April 12-20 2018:

lyleshelton.org.au domain can't be reached April 23 2018

The WHOIS record for lyleshelton.org.au indicated on April 23 2018 that it was in a pendingDelete (Client requested policy delete) status, effective April 20 2018:

auDA says of the pendingDelete (Client requested policy delete) status:

Domain names that are deleted due to a breach of an auDA Published Policy will transition from a “Registered” to a “Pending Policy Delete” state at the time the deletion command is submitted by the registrar. At this time, the domain name will be published on the Official Domain Drop List for 14 calendar days after which it will be purged at the next drop cycle.

auDA policy states of a .org.au domain name:

SCHEDULE F

ELIGIBILITY AND ALLOCATION RULES FOR ORG.AU

The org.au 2LD is for non-commercial organisations.

The following rules are to be read in conjunction with the Eligibility and Allocation Rules for All Open 2LDs, contained in Schedule A of this document.

1.  To be eligible in the org.au 2LD, registrants must be non-commercial organisations as follows:
a) an association incorporated in any Australian State or Territory; or

b) a political party registered with the Australian Electoral Commission; or

c) a trade union or other organisation registered under the Fair Work (Registered Organisations) Act 2009; or

d) a sporting or special interest club operating in Australia; or

e) a charity operating in Australia, as defined in the registrant’s constitution or other documents of incorporation; or

f) a non-profit organisation operating in Australia, as defined in the registrant’s constitution or other documents of incorporation.

2.  Domain names in the org.au 2LD must be:

a) an exact match, abbreviation or acronym of the registrant’s name; or

b) otherwise closely and substantially connected to the registrant, in accordance with the categories of “close and substantial connection” set out in the Guidelines on the Interpretation of Policy Rules for the Open 2LDs.

The domain name lyleshelton.org.au appears to have breached all the auDA requirements of a .org.au domain name.

Lyle Shelton lost his lyleshelton.org.au domain name due to breach of auDA policy.  The registrant for the domain name, David Hutt, would have been notified of this in advance of the domain being taken offline.  Clearly David and Lyle weren’t able to sort out the discrepancies with their two other domain names before they were also found to be in breach of auDA policy.

Lyle Shelton omits to mention why his domain name (not his blog) was taken down

Lyle Shelton omits to mention the real reason why his domain name, not his blog, was taken down.

Yesterday Lyle Shelton tweeted “my blog lyleshelton.com.au has been challenged & taken down”:

It’s worth pointing out that it was his domain name “lyleshelton.com.au” that was taken down, not his blog.

As of June 8 the auDA Drop List shows both “lyleshelton.com.au” and “lyleshelton.net.au” were flagged as Deleted Domain Names:

2018-06-21 15:01:47 lyleshelton.com.au
2018-06-21 15:02:31 lyleshelton.net.au

The Domain Name Drop List shows the date and time that Domain Names are eligible to be purged. When a Domain Name is purged, it becomes available for registration according to the policy of the Regulator. Unless restored the Domain Name will be purged at the next Purge Cycle, also as defined in Regulator Policy. The Purge Cycle is an automated process within the Domain Name Registry System.

auDA has some very strict rules for registering .au domain names, and it would appear that Lyle Shelton has not complied with the particular rules for a .com.au domain name.

The current WHOIS entry for lyleshelton.com.au (see below) shows that the registrant was Whitestone Strategic and the contact person is David Hutt.

The .auDA policy (see below) states that “Domain names in the com.au 2LD” must be “an exact match, abbreviation or acronym of the registrant’s name or trademark” or “otherwise closely and substantially connected to the registrant”.

It would appear that, as it currently stands, “lyleshelton.com.au” meets neither of these requirements.

It is incumbent on Lyle Shelton to ensure he abides by the .auDA rules for domain names if he want to use a .au domain name.

Lyle Shelton’s departure from the Australian Christian Lobby’s board

Lyle Shelton departed the ACL board at the same time he ceased being their Managing Director.

The public ASIC register for the Australian Christian Lobby shows that when Lyle Shelton ceased being Managing Director of the Australian Christian Lobby he also departed the organisation’s board:

Lyle Shelton ceases to be an ACL board member
